I began reading the comments on this post and was shocked to see the number of people denouncing the film. Who can possibly in good conscience rail against the value of consuming less? Forget whether every fact is correct or not--I am not of the substantial scientific or economic background to judge one way or the other. (Though I can say for sure that some of the commenters' supposed counter-facts are completely bogus.)

Consider even the perspective of the religious right, which I imagine makes up many of the people angry with this film. Should we not be promoting the values of stewardship and caring for the planet God has provided? Is it not a disservice to so eagerly consume and destroy the resources that ultimately exist in finite quantities? Should we not be caring for people who have less by taking only what we need? I fail to understand the fundamental lack of compassion and awareness of the simple principles behind the film.

I say shame on people like Glenn Beck who promote their prideful economic principles over those of compassion and human justice.

Keep up the good work, Annie.

I just saw Annie speak last night and she mentioned Glenn Beck's attack on SOS. I Googled it and came across this rather rabid discussion -- to overwhelming to read in detail. Just keep banging your drum, Annie. Social revolution indeed. You will find your followers (myself included).

Consumerism makes zero sense from any logical LONG TERM standpoint. But unfortunately, Beck and most Americans enjoy making money and explointing temporary pleasures rather than living on sustinance as humans were naturally placed. I think the US very lucky it boomed, now the military can afford to defend the it's governments wacked sense of human purpose. The government has WAY more control over its people than most realize, consider how it turns nearly every American at the age of 18 into money-desperate college students at STATE schools that fund the STATE to do more of this shitty leading. The govt controls everything, and until humans learn to dismiss the temptation of greed, it will continue to be this way.

Americans, your consumer days are finishing. There should be five Earths only to support your consumer way of life and your fatty asses. Who do you think will pay the bill and clean up your shit? The rest of the world? Come on! You do better exploring Mars as soon as possible and taking that way.

To all those “criticizing” the Story of Stuff on the merits of its facts, I’m sure all you did your own research. Oh, but wait, it’s easier to simply scream bloody murder, eat the crap that Glenn Beck feeds you, then jump on your soapboxes that truly have have no factual merits.
The hypocrisy is astounding. Glenn Beck does not comment based on facts. He sensationalizes issues and is nothing more than a firestarter. What HE does is dangerous and truly Un-American. Beck choose to polarize this country rather than unify it. Beck undermines the opportunity America has and the efforts Americans make to become a world leader in clean energy, green economies, and blaze trails for a prosperous future for humanity. Beck symbolizes and furthers America’s regression to an undereducated, ignorant, irrational, racist country that revels in having the wool pulled over its eyes.
The Story of Stuff gives me hope that I might retain what little is left of my pride in being an American. I hope the message of this film spreads and that our country can rally, support, and implement its ideas and ideals.
And for those attacking the facts of the film, did any of you even bother to looks at the cited documents at http://www.storyofstuff.com/resources.html ? I’m going to go with a no.
And to Rose Johnson, comment #299, you missed the point of the film entirely. Yes, you benefit from capitalism today (emphasis being on TODAY). But please, try to think past your own nose. In order to produce frivolous consumer goods that most people use for a year or less, the Earth potentially took hundreds or thousands of years to produce the initial, natural resource. And when that consumer good is put in the trash, it does not magically return to the Earth in a way that replenishes the original resource. Rose, I do agree with you though that ignorance is bliss. And yes, you are in fact correct, one cannot see if they do not open their eyes. However, I think you are the one ranting about things you do not understand.

I can not understand the logic of you people who criticize capitolism. Do you realize that you benefit from it everyday of your life? My only hope is to pray for your eyes to be opened! You can't see if you close your eyes! I guess ignorance is bliss and this is why you continue your happy ranting about things you do not understand! Try expressing yourself under a communist government and see how far you get.
